Of the three domains of learning or education, the affective domain is the most affected in Filipino children and students.  I will explain this general observation further after the definition of some concepts.
What is the Affective Domain of Learning?  The Affective Learning Domain addresses a learner’s emotions towards learning experiences. A learner’s attitudes, interest, attention, awareness, and values are demonstrated by affective behaviors.

These emotional behaviors which are organized in a hierarchical format also, starting from simplest and building to most complex.  The following summarizes the hierarchy of this domain starting from the simplest up to the most complex.

RECEVING PHENOMENA -  an awareness; willingness to listen

RESPONDING TO PHENOMENA – taking an active part in learning; participating

VALUING – the value a person attaches to something

ORGANIZATION - organizing values into order of priority

INTERNALIZING VALUES – behavior which is controlled by a value system

In the above-mentioned processes, most Filipino children fail the hierarchy (if it were to be used as a measure of their learning experiences).  This is because first, children might be able to receive the phenomena (or stimuli), they will not respond to them properly.  Also, they value the things in life less than their parents did when they were their age.  With the advent of modern technology, can most children nowadays value street games like “tumbang preso” if they enjoy more playing Counter Strike?

Their organizationals abilities are also seen degrading over the years.  Most Filipino children are more reliant on their elders for things that they can accomplish themselves like putting their garbage in a garbage can.  These among many other things are what I see in many children here in the Philippines.  As a means to instill discipline, we usually talk to our kids the value of organizing things.  We don’t usually slap them.  We use diplomacy.  And it seems to be working on them.

The most complex part of the affective domain (internalizing values) is the most difficult for children/pupils/students to develop. In my experience, the retention of kids could either be short or they are simply affected by their environment seeing other kids ignore their parents or do nasty things after having been lectured not to do them again.  Children seem to have an extreme difficulty remembering the do’s and don’ts imposed by their elders.

For a more in-depth analysis of these observations, I will have to observe more so I can post it here in the future.

For now, I’d appreciate your thoughts on this through your comments.

Those observations might not be applicable to the present generation. I hope no more parents would hit or slap their children just for the sake of disciplining them.

Bago na pala ang theme nito. Nice color scheme.
